For over 2000 years, thermal medicine has proved its effectiveness against many illnesses.

Today this therapeutic approach is recognised by the Académie de Médecine and it is more important than ever in the face of longer life expectancies, chronic illnesses and the poor quality of life of modern times.

A therapeutic source of savings for the health system

More than 500,000 people follow a thermal treatment programme every year.
They bear witness to the benefits of thermal treatments, just like the thousands of specialist doctors who prescribe the programmes. Since 1947 they have been covered by Social Security (in France), according to a standardised list of treatments, adapted to each illness.

For which illnesses can a treatment be prescribed at Bagnoles de l'Orne?

The oligometallic thermal water at Bagnoles de l'Orne has all the properties required to treat illnesses falling into these three categories:

These three treatment courses can be followed individually or in pairs according to each patient's profile.

Three weeks of treatments for comprehensive care

A thermal treatment programme is generally prescribed as an alternative to medicine, but it can also complement "traditional" treatments.

18 days of treatment are needed to fully benefit from its effects.

Thermal treatments (baths, showers, massages etc.) are the main element of each programme.

Discussions with doctors help to raise awareness and encourage prevention, enabling spa-goers to manage their illness more comfortably. Thermal medicine therefore concentrates first and foremost on the patient, which is one of the factors differentiating it from medication.

How is a thermal treatment programme prescribed (in France)?

  • The patient's doctor fills out the treatment cover questionnaire with the patient, using CERFA form no. 11139*01, indicating the course(s) of treatment.
  • Important: The patient makes direct contact with the thermal spa to book the treatment dates and organise accommodation.
  • Before the start of treatment, the patient meets a spa doctors who draws up a personalised treatment programme. These treatments are administered by hydrotherapists and physiotherapists.
  • An intermediary report is drawn up halfway through the course of treatment, and at the end the patient and spa doctor make an assessment of the programme: the minutes from this meeting are forwarded to the patient's doctor.
